Summary

Notes on the classification of Monotremata (platypus, echidna) which was the subject of furious debate in the 1820's and 1830s. The collection contains an autograph manuscript of 18 pages stich-sewn; printed 'Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London' (44 pages) with a 4 page manuscript translation into French of the observations of Richard Owen; diagram mounted on card showing the dissection of a platypus, autograph notes, 1 July 1833. These notes were used for an article published 'Nouvelle considèrations sur la nature des glandes abdominals des monotrêmes' L'Institut, 2, no 75, 1834.

Biography/History French zoologist. Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire was appointed professor of quadrupeds, cetaceans, birds, reptiles and fish at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793 at the age of twenty-one. During his tenure he published a series of articles and monographs on the platypus.
