| Summary |
Notes on the classification of Monotremata (platypus, echidna) which was the subject of furious debate in the 1820's and 1830s. The collection contains an autograph manuscript of 18 pages stich-sewn; printed 'Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London' (44 pages) with a 4 page manuscript translation into French of the observations of Richard Owen; diagram mounted on card showing the dissection of a platypus, autograph notes, 1 July 1833. These notes were used for an article published 'Nouvelle considèrations sur la nature des glandes abdominals des monotrêmes' L'Institut, 2, no 75, 1834.

| Biography/History |
French zoologist. Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire was appointed professor of quadrupeds, cetaceans, birds, reptiles and fish at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793 at the age of twenty-one. During his tenure he published a series of articles and monographs on the platypus. |
