Stephen Claypole was the New York correspondent of the London Evening News (1968-1970) and Foreign Editor for the Sydney Morning Herald (1972-1975) and investigated the disappearance of Francis James (Alfred Francis Phillip James) in China in 1969. Claypole was also a member of the London and Sydney based Committees set up to campaign for James' release. Francis James, born in Tasmania in 1918, was a publisher and journalist who disappeared in China in 1969. Francis James had been arrested and was eventually expelled in 1973 after extensive lobbying by various groups and individuals.
