Joseph Beete Jukes, an English geologist, was appointed geological surveyor to Newfoundland from 1839 to 1840. He was appointed as naturalist to the voyage of H.M.S. Fly commissioned to make the first hydrographic survey of the north east coast of Australia from 1842 to 1845. Jukes' major contribution to the scientific understanding of Australia was the detailed charting of the Great Barrier Reef that provided support for Darwin's theory concerning the formation of coral reefs.
