An illuminated and engrossed document of royal grant of coat of arms to Australian Academy of Humanities, illustrated, with three gold-coloured containers housing wax seals attached by ribbon. Includes the letters patent, with the armorial bearings, supporters, and motto of the Academy, and was granted in 1973. The arms is a shield emblazoned with two keys, as symbols of knowledge, within which are incorporated the letters A and H and incorporating the wattle motif and stars of the Southern Cross. The supporters are a Grecian maiden and youth, girdled with belts composed of the letters A and H repeated in sequence; both wear wreaths of wattle blossom and support long flaming torches, symbolising the handing on of the torch of life. The motto 'humani nihil aliendum' from Terence, Heatontimorumenos, line 77, 'homo sum: humani nihil a me alienum puto', that is, 'I have an interest in all things concerning humanity'. aAvailable for research.
