Summary

Garry, Debbie and Jay Collins talk about the very recent dust storms; the impact of the drought, removing livestock etc.; a 100 yr. weather memory, recent yrs. being worse; early years the conditions were easier; keeping the farm going; difficult debt problem; getting back in the black; morale, loss of families, working away; effect on local towns - Morawa, Mullewa, Perenjori; remedial actions; farming, being very testing right now; the effect of the emptying country, having to adapt. Debbie Collins lists community activities. Garry Collins lists community activities. The dicussion continues on the benefit of sport, the interaction, black humour; marriages; suicides; "Exceptional Circumstances" application; alternatives, people prepared to consider the benefit of staying on farm; feeding people as world population increases; R & D Research and Development; alternative crops, oil mallee planting; the learning curve in Australian farming; succession and continuity; farming a lifestyle; links with land. Jay Collins (son) speaks about being keen to farm despite difficulties; benefit of rural education; climate change; the future of the farm; costs today; Muresk (Agricultural College nr. Northam)
