John Costelloe talks about his family background and early years; joining the Commonwealth Public Service in the Defence Signals Department in Albert Park, Vic.; joining the police force in Melbourne in 1950; first posting at St Kilda Police Station then the move to the 'Wireless Patrol' (mobile plain clothes squad of policemen, responding to Division 24 (D24) police messages), and later to the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) at Russell Street; his progress through the force until he retired in Bendigo; his marriage and early years of married life; first homes and postings; playing with friends as a child, games played, tennis, cowboys and Indians; Boy Scouts, Cadets; sport at school, attending Christian Brothers College; weekend activities as a schoolboy; impact of drugs and .05 Blood Alcohol Level on police work; Six o'clock swill; the impact of his retirement on household budget; reflections on the nature of police work; how administrative tasks increasing the further up the ladder you got; Howard Government policy on Iraq War; reflections on Australia's position in global politics; John Howard Refugee legislation; maritime union strikes in the late 1990s and police involvement.
