Trudi Westh (nee Babb), born in East St. Kilda talks about attending school in Noorat, Vic.; training as a mothercraft nurse in Melbourne at 17; being employed at the Blind Babies' Nursery for four years, caring for babies and toddlers; the Nursery, located on St. Kilda Road, having residential accommodation for babies and children, separate from the RVIB school; daily routine in the Nursery, shifts for the nurses, bathing, dressing, feeding the children; her memories of Sister Lindsey; the children's relationships with the staff and staff relationships; the WWII evacuation of the Nursery and School to Olinda; 1939 bushfires; her 21st birthday; teaching the children skills, special celebrations, fund-raising and publicity; Kindergarten activities, family visits; staff not being allowed to discuss the children with parents.
Westh discusses meeting her husband at Olinda; leaving her employment and running the RVIB auxiliaries; the differences between St. Kilda Road school and the Olinda temporary school; the achievements of Neil Westh and the first cohort of children in the Nursery; the role played by Neil in the early education of his own children; the creation of Vision Australia; blind children in mainstream schools; her activities with the RVIB auxiliaries and their role today; reliance of blind children on charity for their education; her thoughts about education and services for the blind today; her life and association with the blind community; recording of Trudi Westh's consent for access and use of her interview.
