  • A well crafted book. Easy to read, with a delightful turn of phrase. It provides an insightful, personal and often humerous look at the cultural differences and similarities between Australian and traditional New Guinea life. A couple from Melbourne spend a year on a remote New Guinea island, cut off from all modern amenities. Roger Averill describes beautifully their daily experiences, from the grand to the mundane, the moments of great joy to the deepest woes, the beautiful to the ugly and the strange to the downright weird. I highly recommend this book.
