George Lee Kim, a Chinese Australian, speaks of his upbringing with his grandparents, migration from China of his grandfather William Lee Kim in the 1870s establishing himself here first as a gold miner then as a market gardener, his British-Australian grandmother Ellen Plowright, the Chinese community in Bendigo in the 1920s and 1930s, detailed description of Chinese market gardening including vegetables grown, irrigation and natural fertilisation procedures, the tools used, social and business organisation of the Chinese market gardening sector, goldmining techniques including Chinese vs. European methods, gambling customs and places the games were played, financial arrangements, family relations within a mixed Chinese-British marriage.
