Huon Hassell talks about growing up in rural N.S.W.; his memories of subsistence farming on the family farm and orchard; life on farm during the Depression and war years; his memories of WWII and drought; wartime preparations at school; sighting midget submarines in Sydney Harbour; his schooling; the influence of WWII on family life; his bursary to Hurlstone Agricultural High School and his experiences as student; the decision to leave the farm for further education; being awarded a Commonwealth scholarship to study agricultural economics in the 1960s; the difficulties of financing his education at University of Sydney; his cadetship in Soil Conservation Service; working with farmers on soil erosion and conservation in New South Wales; becoming a farm planning officer in Tamworth in late 1950s; leaving Soil Conservation Service for a position with the Wagga and District Rural Service; his first farm visit and subsequent success as an agricultural adviser; the decision to move to Goulburn to go into private practice as an agricultural adviser; his experiences with the Tablelands Management Services Group and developing client base during the 1960s; the revolution in thinking about farm management in the 1960s and the development of specialist consultants.
Hassall discusses the influence of Cost Price Squeeze Theory in the 1960s; contacts at CSIRO in Canberra; the Dept. of Foreign Affairs establishing assistance with the sheep industry in South Korea; developing a demonstration sheep farm in South Korea; travelling in isolated country areas of South Korea; return visits to the demonstration farm; his experiences as a pioneer overseas consultant in the 1960s; the Farm Assistance Project in Gansu Province of China; working with the Grasslands Institute in China and his award as outstanding foreign expert; his book: Adventures of an Antipodean Adviser; winning international projects in a highly competitive environment; the differences in Australia's approach to development projects and those of other countries; the importance of assessing requirements of funding agency and monitoring progress; areas for international aid projects which need funding; future of rural international consultancies; maintaining contact with local implementing agencies after the completion of a project; the future of Australian agriculture; the importance of support for private consulting services; sustainable agriculture, particularly in relation to water use and irrigation; the many travel experiences while working overseas.
