Ian Lindenmayer talks about his early life in Queensland; his early work experiences; his scholarships and university studies; his employment in the public service in Queensland while completing an honours degree; accepting an Administrative Traineeship in the Commonwealth Public Service; his training and placements as an Administrative Trainee; Minute Secretary, Public Service Board; Research Officer, Department of Immigration; posting to London (1965), selecting assisted migrants; White Australia policy; Australia's desire for British migrants; introducing automated standard letters; establishing a new office in Bristol; his appointment to San Francisco (1968); to Canberra (1970), as researcher in the Planning Section, initiating a points system of migrant selection; the dismantling of the Department under Labor; ethnic communities' and politicians' responses to introduction of numerical selection standards; studying economics at the ANU (1970); Executive Officer to the Ministerial and Immigration Planning Councils (1972), Australian Population and Immigration Council; dismantling of the Department of Immigration from 1974; Labor's response to the fall of Saigon (1975).
