Sono Osato Elmaleh talks about seeing the Diaghilev Ballets Russes while living in France as a child; the development of her interest in dance as a child in Chicago; her ballet classes with Adolph Bolm and Bernice Holmes; her audition with the Ballets Russes and joining the company; travelling with the company to Europe at the age of fourteen; the response of de Basil to the outbreak of WWII; travelling to Australia with the de Basil company during the war; interacting with the British soldiers en route to Australia; touring the United States with the de Basil company; memories of rehearsing and performing Nijinska's Les Noces; Bronislava Nijinska; the changing Diaghilev repertoire; the movement of dancers between the Ballets Russes companies; the success of the de Basil Australian tours; the hospitality during Australian and English tours; being photographed in Australia; her transition to soloist roles, in particular dancing the Siren in The Prodigal Son; David Lichine; Michel Fokine; Tamara Grigorieva; Roman Jasinski; Galina Ulanova in Romeo and Juliet; her memories of attending a performance by the Bolshoi Ballet in New York; individual dancers in the de Basil Ballets Russes; Tatiana Riabouchinska; her most important teachers; her memories of George Balanchine, Michel Fokine and Leonide Massine; Serge Diaghilev; Lydia Sokolova; Tamara Karsavina; dancers she and Lee Christofis wish they had seen on stage.
