Tape 1& 2: Laurie Short talks about his early interest in politics; his family origins; his schooldays; his early occupations; his interest in communism and Trotskyism; his work with the Ironworkers' Union; World War II; his marriage to Nancy Borlase; the Balmain Branch of the union; Cockatoo Island; the places he has lived; his membership within the Labor Party; the electorates; union officials; publishing of 'The Socialist'; Jim McClelland; the 6 week strike (1945) of shipyard workers; the building up of shipyards during the war; history of the union; amendments in the Arbitration Act. Tape 3: A court case over union election fraud; the outcome of the case and its consequences; his position as Secretary of the Federated Ironworkers' Union (AFIU); trouble with communists within the union; his views on religion; Catholic feelings in the Labor movement; migrants in the AFIU; the influence of the union on the Communist Party of Australia.
Tape 4: Short discusses the reforms in the AFIU during the 1950's; elections within the union; his feelings on communism and democracy; strikes; John Merritt; assistance in the union; politics and unionism in the U.S.A. Tapes 5, 6 & 7: Short speaks about employers and unions; depressed living standards and the weakened Australian economy; Norm Gallagher; his association with the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC); his first job with the ABC in 1956/57 as a member of the Australian Advisory Committee and later the NSW Advisory Committee of the ABC; his appointment to the ABC in Feb. 1976 to become Vice-Chairman in 1977; the Dix Committee Inquiry and its effect on him; being appointed as a member of the Senate to the University of Sydney in Nov. 1978 for a four year term; the different mood of university students in the 70s as opposed to the 60s when there were many riots and demonstrations.
