| Summary |
The untold story of how Australia failed to develop the atomic bomb during World War II. Set against the industrial background of Port Kembla, wetrace the work of local inventors working frokm garages and sheds. We see the "Southern Cross" pile, based on the Fermi design and trace how the RAAF adapted three aircraft to serve as "Atomic Bombers". Finally we see the disintegration of the project from government indifference, wide scale sabotage from a crack german commando unit and the kidnapping of the main scientist to serve in Berlin, working on Hitler's bomb. Apart from the military and industrial aspects of the store, we also see ordinary life in war-time Australia and the hopes and dreams of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstance.
