Biography/History

Opera singer, singing teacher and golfer. Dame Joan Hammond was a New Zealand-born opera singer who gained international acclaim during the 1940s and 1950s. After her retirement from the stage in 1965, Hammond taught singing at the Victorian College of the Arts and was artistic director of the Victorian Opera Company, 1971-1976. Hammond was also a talented golfer who was three times New South Wales ladies golf champion. The papers were the property of Misses Olive and Gladys Scrutton, theatrical costumiers who made dresses for Dame Joan Hammond.
