Bruce Watts Lockier born 1928 in Maylands South Australia, speaks about his twin sister; his parents; the Magill property; his schooling; Brookside orchard; learning from his father; the depression years; his first job with Government Printing Office; learning history of printing; working on the Linotype machine; moving out of the Printing industry; his job as Section Organiser of the Apple and Pear Growers section of the Fruitgrowers and Market Gardeners Association; creation of the Apple and Pear Growers Association; Jonathon Apples and public pressure for bigger apples; the beginning of sod culture and irrigation; introduction of new varieties with loss of export markets overseas; controlled atmosphere storage, bulk handling; main problems of marketing; development of cold storage; his role as Chair of the Export Shippers Association; early export methods; publicity promotion, improvement in sales; improving quality through encouraging picking at the right time; changes in demand for different varieties of apples; educating the public about varieties; the structure of the Apple and Pear Growers' Association; generations of Hills growers; methods of tree improvement; invention of picking platforms by growers; role of the Association in encouraging change.
