Bryan Redden talks about his family background and use of the land at Cudlee Creek; early varieties of apples grown; early storage of apples; the East End Market; land clearing, plantings and use of chemicals; drought and reliance on rainfall; grandfather's vegetable growing and running sheep to supplement income; his father's work on the property and purchase of new land; his childhood home and work on the property; picking apples in the 1930s-40s, use of horses and ladders; learning skills from father; changes brought through irrigation and spraying; cider making; the export of apples in the 1930s and 1940s; pruning, orchard labour; apple grading and cold storage; the art of apple wrapping; schooling at Cudlee Creek and Birdwood High School; the Royal Adelaide Show; Department of Agriculture and Agricultural Bureau; pest control; working conditions on the farm; taking fruit to market; pricing of varieties of fruit and selling; market rules; balancing marketing with other orchard work; working with father and brother for a wage and later partnership; impact of hail storms and frosts; canneries; orchard cultivation, changes to tree shape, pruning, root stock, pegging out and distance between plantings.
Redden discusses WWII and petrol rationing; the government acquisition scheme; interstate marketing; 1950s partnership and purchase of The Prairie; irrigation methods, use of dam water and sprinkler systems; Ash Wednesday, bushfire protection, the risk of fire and Black Sunday bushfire (1956); Apple and Pear Growers Association; meeting his future wife (1953), her background, their marriage (1961); the increased competition due to cold storage; keeping up with new varieties; pear growing; changes in picking and packing, introduction of tractors and bulk bins in the 1960s; Controlled Atmosphere Storage; the role of the Dept. of Agriculture in assisting growers and promoting change; making a living from apple growing in the 1980s; his experiences and memories of the Ash Wednesday Bushfire (1983); the impact of the fire and rebuilding the property; development of containers for apples and how the returnable crate system worked; the journey of apples from the tree to the crate; changes to apple grading; Cudlee Creek Growers and Cooperatives; moving towards retirement in 1994; currently running sheep and still delivering fruit to Adelaide Zoo; Maggie Beer; reflects on major changes in the industry, the impact of supermarkets; the future of the industry and the impact on growers of increasing controls; his aim to continue to live on the property.
