O'Neill speaks of his middle-class family background and early interest in drawing, his mother was an art & craft teacher, both parents politically minded but not religious, his education at Scotch College, cartooning for the school newspaper, studies in economics and politics at Monash university becoming politically active largely as a result of anti-Vietnam moratoriums before dropping out, though accepted for law at University of Melbourne he decided to pursue journalism through a cadetship with the Australian after working as a copyboy on the Truth and an artist for Southdown Press, his time at the Randwick Technical College learning life drawing from Bill Mahoney, finished his cadetship early because of this broad experience, his involvement in the Australian Journalist Association holding the position as President for the period of 1980-82, his work for the Australian, how he travelled through Europe for 18 months and his work as a graphic artist in London on the Daily Mail, the influences shaping his illustrating and cartooning such as Tanner, Petty and Levine, how he freelanced in Sydney later full-time illustrator for the Sydney Morning Herald and the National Times, the Bulletin, and Financial Review, his work patterns and themes, the importance of the idea.
