Dr. Xavier Mertz was a Swiss explorer who accompanied Sir Douglas Mawson on the Australian Antarctic Expedition 1911-1914. Mertz was one of two men, the other being Lieutenant Belgrave Ninnis, who accompanied Mawson on a surveying trip. After Ninnis fell down a crevasse, along with most of their provisions, Mawson and Mertz were left with insufficient provisions to return to base. During the return to the base at Camp Denison Mawson and Mertz were forced to eat their sled dogs to survive, with Mertz succumbing to vitamin A poisoning.
