Sir William Jackson Hooker, 1785-1865, laid the foundations of his botanical collection, including species discovered in Australia, in the period directly following his marriage and settlement at Halesworth, Suffolk. Hooker cultivated close relationships with naturalists and botanists, encouraging them to send specimens to him, which included Australian species that were later incorporated into the Royal Gardens at Kew. In addition, no less than eleven Australian species were described and illustrated in Hooker's book Exotic flora. Hooker was appointed as director of the Royal Gardens at Kew in 1841, expanding the size of the Gardens from 10 to 75 acres, with an arboreteum of 270 acres.
