Summary

At barely three weeks old, little Crispy is packed off to an orphanage near his home in South Wales. Seven years later, he's off on a long, long voyage to Clontarf Boys' Town in Western Australia, as a 'guest' of the Christian Brothers. 'Fallible men in black' is how the author describes these priestly tyrants, who worked their boys hard and beat them often, taking their pleasures where they could find them. on their doorstep. Two subjects were never spoken about: your parents and sexual abuse. Why did the authorities tell the boys that their parents were dead? By the time Crispy left Clontarf to be a shearer, the damage was irreversible. Amid scenes of his school days in Australia, snapshots of youthful exuberance and glimpses of boyish happiness, David Crisp highlights a story of abandonment and rediscovery. There are dark notes in the background of David's life. The hurt remains.
