Emmerson speaks of his family background and his childhood in Rockhampton and Brisbane, St. Michael's Primary School then Wynnum West State School, his early interest in drawing, Courier Mail cartoons, his developing interest in social issues while at Manly High School, leaving the school cadets to play music in the school band as a drummer, his activities in art and surfing, on leaving school he left home to go the Aquarius Festival in Nimbin on the northern NSW coast, sought labouring jobs, the development of his musical and artistic skills eventually becoming a roadie for a Brisbane based band, his work as a surveyor's assistant and eventually became a draughtsman for a surveying firm in Rockhampton then became a freelance surveyor draughtsman, worked for 5 years as a surveyors' draughtsman in Livingstone Shire in Central Queensland, his developing interest in politics, undertook freelance drawing for the Morning Bulletin and later offered a full-time position with the Morning Bulletin, the encouragement offered by Sean Leahy, the Black and White Artists Club, how the Morning Bulletin was bought out by the O'Reilly Group, APN leading to syndication of his work by APN, awards, the influence of Lindsay Foyle, a meeting in 1995 of prominent cartoonists such as Gary Trudeau, Jim Borgman, Mort Drucker, Chuck Jones and Sparky Schulz, the 1998 Association of American Editorial Cartoonist Convention, his participation in State Library of Queensland workshops to foster drawing and cartooning by children, the public response to cartoons, the social contribution of cartoonists.
