Richard Allom born 1944 in Brisbane, speaks about his family; his parents; wanting to write an architectural family history of the Cowlishaws' contribution; his Windsor house being State heritage listed; his sister; commencing architecture at Queensland University, getting a job for three years on oil rig in Bass Strait; being accepted in Melbourne University architecture school; George Tibbits; Bauhaus architectural teaching approach; his concerns about focus on CAD (computer aided design); graduating and working for a small practice in Melbourne; slum clearance and modernist towers versus heritage conservation; the social difficulties with high rise towers; his marriage; travelling to Europe early (1975); the Labor Government important for introducing the 'National Estate' and Justice Hope's inquiry in (1975); working for Queensland National Trust (1975); principles for heritage conservation developed by National Trust prior to Burra Charter; Anne Berminghan, the first Australian member of International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS's); Max Bourke; Venice Charter; founding of ICOMOS in Australia; the Victorian Government becoming the first State to have its own heritage legislation; the Sisalation Scholarship from Institute of Architects; Meredith Walker.
Allom talks about Federal Government cutting back on heritage funding (1976); being in Burra the night the charter was adopted; Burra Charter funded by Australian Heritage Commission; Jim Kerr; conservation plans; Gold Coast heritage study; his passion for looking after old things; the next generation more interested in sustainability; loosing his job with National Trust and going into private practice; Commonwealth Government grants; using historic, vernacular principles in designing a new shire hall for Birdsville, winning a merit award from the Institute of Architects; Clive Lucas; Queensland National Trust Heritage list; Queensland planning legislation, Queensland Heritage Council; the Queensland Government determining to dispose of historic buildings (1993); Treasury Building; Miles Lewis; Rockhampton Railway Roundhouse winning a national RAIA award, (1994); his three children; his wife death ten years ago; remarrying; closing down the office but keeping the business; still working on the odd job; having a good time all his life; his interests.
