Joseph Lewis-Hughes, born in Forbes, N.S.W. speaks about his WWII service in the Navy, career in the Public Service, Valuer-General's Department and State Emergency Service; the move from Lismore to Dubbo, climate differences; the Dubbo Soldier settlement after WWI; his father's Welsh background, coming to Australia (1911) and his studies at Hawkesbury Agricultural College before the war; his father serving in the artillery during WWI, but discharged to his ill health; his mother's family background; his father becoming an instructor at Hawkesbury Agricultural College and taking up a soldier settlement block at Pullabukka, located between Forbes and Grenfell; the size of the block being too small with limited rainfall; his father being on the soldier settlement block until 1941 until joining the army in WWII; share farming with his brother Vince; the blocks of which there are just two left, the others having been sold up.
Lewis-Hughes discusses being an only child; the family use of a sulky for transportation and later a small Morris in the mid 1920s; drought, water coming from galvanised tanks or being pumped up from the dam using a tractor and hand pump; stock losses, no market price for wheat and sheep; his mother's garden; the rabbit plagues, rabbits being netted, trapped, poisoned and shot, his traps and the sale of the skins; the family home being made out of cyprus pine, sleeping arrangements and childhood activities; the collection of honey from bush bees; keeping poultry and turkeys; house and farm duties, making butter, killing of an animal for food once a week; cool safes; itinerant workers; dealing with dust storms, land management and rabbit plagues; the Soldier Settlers' Relief Board; the Depression and stigma of obtaining dole vouchers; his father carrying out trials and experiments for the Department of Agriculture; family members share-farming at Gunnedah; Returned Services League (RSL) and Anzac day; the friendship and mateship between his father and other farmers who were returned soldiers, helping each other; religious affiliations.
