Summary

Indonesia's independence, declared in 1945, was recognized internationally in December, 1949. There was peace after almost eight years of war and revolution. The new republic began sending large groups of performers abroad on national cultural missions. This documentary presents some of their stories--Container. Film description: Between 1952-1965, the young republic of Indonesia sent large groups of performers abroad on national cultural missions. This documentary presents some of their stories, with interviews and photos. The early period of the Indonesian Republic was marked by extensive cultural traffic with the world. During the Soekarno era, artists acted as Indonesian ambassadors, travelling abroad on their own initiative, sent by non-government cultural organizations, and by the government. This documentary presents the stories of performers who joined the government cultural missions, which presented artists from many areas of Indonesia. Film Description: Between 1952-1965, the young republic of Indonesia sent large groups of performers abroad on national cultural missions. This documentary presents some of their stories, with interviews and photos. The early period of the IndonesianRepublic was marked by extensive cultural traffic with the world. During the Soekarno era, artists acted as Indonesian ambassadors, travelling abroad on their own initiative, sent by non-government cultural organizations, and by the government. These missions toured Colombo (1952); the People’s Republic of China (1954); East Pakistan (1954); Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, the USSR and Cairo (1957); Singapore (1959); Honolulu, Japan, Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore (1961); the USSR, PRC, North Korea, North Vietnam (1961); Thailand (1962); the Philippines (1963); Pakistan (1964); Cambodia, Japan (1964); New York, Holland, Paris (1964); Tanzania (1965); and PRC, North Korea and Japan (1965). The documentary contains interviews with 30 Indonesian artists, photographs from their personal collections, and material from newspapers and magazines.
