Greg Hartung, born in Maryborough, Queensland (1948) discusses his family background; schooling and sports played; tertiary studies in Arts and Journalism; working in politics and sports journalism; receiving his Master of Arts from the University of Sydney (late 1970s); serving in various sports administration councils, committees, directorships, boards, etc.; serving as the General Manager of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) (1984-1988); the culture of professional sport administration at that time; sports funding and strategic planning; his involvement since 1995 with Paralympic sports; serving as President of the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) (1997-2009); preparations for the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games; highlights of the Sydney Paralympic Games.
Hartung discusses public attitudes towards Paralympic sports; Paralympic sports as a sporting movement; serving as the President of Oceania Paralympic Committee (2000-2005); serving on the International Paralympic Committee; the Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008) Paralympic Games; the upcoming London 2012 Paralympic Games; Paralympic Games bidding and benefits to host cities; his experience of evaluating bids; the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games bid; the relationship between the APC and the Australian Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee (IOC); serving with the IOC; issues of ownership of the Paralympic brand; social attitudes towards people with a disability; professional colleagues and key industry and political figures; awards and honours received; personal plans for the future; his vision for Paralympic sports into the future; recent sports policy and administration trends.
