Goal setting is a motivational technique effective in many subject matter areas with students of various grades and abilities. This paper describes the use of individual goal-setting conferences to increase learning in various subject matter areas. The technique includes a weekly individual conference in which the student is given the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of his previous week's goals and then assisted in choosing new goals from a prepared goal checklist. The conference procedures provide for the planned application of specific motivational principles. The program then attempts to increase the student's rate of skill mastery by raising his motivational level. Chapters outline the steps necessary to insure successful preconference planning, including suggestions for specifying goals toward which children might choose to work, for selecting children to take part in the program, for implementing motivational principles during the conferences, and for evaluating the effectiveness of the goal-setting program.
