Maria Lacinski, retired factory worker and Polish immigrant born in Germany 1914, ethnically Polish speaks about her experiences during WWII; being taken into forced labour by the Germans; living in displaced persons' camps in West Germany during the postwar period; emigrating with her family to Australia by plane under the IRO scheme; negative experiences of the Bonegilla migrant camp yet her delight to be free of war-torn Europe; her husband being sent to Newport in Melbourne to work on the railways; how she was sent to Mildura where she worked as an ironing lady, her happiness at Mildura; how the family eventually united in Melbourne living in the western suburbs, building a bungalow and living in it for some years before moving into a proper house; her husband's death in 1971; her various jobs and a hard working life; having regarded herself as an Australian first and that she did not participate in the Polish community organisations; her preference being to mix in social clubs with a broad community base of various nationalities.
