Denise Allen, born in Pinnaroo, South Australia (1954), discusses her family background and early memories; schooling; teacher training; getting a job as a meteorological observer at the Bureau of Meteorology, Melbourne; her early interests in geography, mapping and travel; university studies at Monash University (1970s); being one of the first women in her field; other women colleagues at that time; attitudes toward women and remote postings; being posted to Willis Island and Brisbane; being posted to Macquarie Island (1985); Mawson Station, Antarctica (1986, 2005); Davis Station (1988, 2007); Casey Station (1992); training and the need for multi-skilling; projects and observations undertaken; equipment and methods; mail airdrops; facilities and accommodation; showers and toileting; huskies; vehicles.
Allen discusses dangers and injuries; clothing; food; weather and scenery at each of the stations; changes in communications systems since the 1980s; social interaction at the stations; safety protocols; photography and computing; the various formal and informal duties and skills development undertaken by staff at the stations; social events, traditions and recreational activities; staff numbers at the bases; seasonal affective disorder; the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) Code of Conduct; gender and sexual relations at bases; field trips; working on a marine science ship (2003); working for the Bureau of Meteorology and living throughout Australia; retirement; her involvement in the ANARE Club; honours received.
