Norma Beer, born in Donnybrook, Western Australia (1942) discusses her family and family background; schooling and sports; beginning nursing training at age 18 at Royal Perth Hospital, Western Australia; the Perth Commonwealth Games (1962); working with paraplegic athletes at those Games; graduating from nursing (1963); marriage (1964); children; nursing at Derby District Hospital; nursing at a 'Native Hospital'; the Flying Doctor Service; nursing at Meekatharra District Hospital (1966-7); working in the Spinal Unit in Perth (1968-72); being employed by the W.A. Paraplegic and Quadriplegic Association as a Nursing Consultant (1975); extensive travel through W.A. to consult with clients; receiving a degree in Counselling; educating children about people with disabilities; working for the W.A. Wheelchair Association at sporting events.
Beer discusses working as a team nurse at Wheelchair Games and Paralympic Games (1979 to the late 1990s); descriptions of particular Games, their facilities and athletes; working with classification and drugs in sport (1988); being appointed to the Medical Commission to look at issues of drugs in sport (1994); volunteering at the Sydney Paralympic Games (2000); the increasing professionalism of Paralympic Games; the integration of athletes with a disability within National Sport Federations; people who have influenced Paralympic sport; great athletes with a disability; public attitudes towards people with a disability; improvements in infrastructure, accessibility and life expectancy for people with a disability; the value of sport for people with a disability; awards and honours received; publications and conference presentations; her contribution to Paralympic sport; providing wheelchairs for children in Bali; her philosophies on life and helping others; plans for the future.
