Summary

Kevin Cunningham, born in Perth (1939), discusses his family background; schooling and sports played; Technical College and an apprenticeship; a car accident and injuries (1957); having his legs amputated; Shenton Park Rehabilitation Centre; rehabilitation exercises; becoming aware of wheelchair sports; being encouraged by a doctor to play sports; learning to use crutches; winning events at the Shenton Park Hospital Day Events (1958-1960); a description of wheelchairs for basketball; various employments including with car companies and a sheet metal company; the beginnings of the Australian Paralympic movement; fundraising and the Rome Paralympic Games (1960); the Perth Paraplegic Commonwealth Games (1962); not attending the Tokyo Paralympic Games (1964); the Jamaica Paraplegic Games (1966); marriage (1966); children; Tel Aviv Paralympic Games (1968); the Stoke Mandeville Tel Aviv Games (1968).

Cunningham discusses the Edinburgh Commonwealth Paraplegic Games (1970); involvement in a community Cricket Club; the Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled, Hobart; various events competed in and medals won; other athletes, managers and trainers; influences and great Paralympians; injury and retirement (1979); establishing the W.A. Wheelchair Association Seniors Group; the Australian Paralympic Committee; declining an invitation to the Sydney Paralympic Games (2000); attending a reunion for the 1960 Sydney Paralympics (2010); social attitudes towards people with a disability; his vision for Paralympic sports in the future; his plans for his future.
