"The uncommon Utrecht edition, published by Lucas de Vries, notable for the dramatic new image of three views of the wreck of the vessel on the title page, an image not used by any of the other publishers... Also the second edition to print a full version of the text by adding the very significant alternative eye-witness account of the events in the form of the letter by the minister Gijsbert Bastiaenz one of the survivors of the wreck...It describes Pelsaert's boat voyage along the West Australian coast to seek help at Batavia, the first extensive disocvery of the Australian continent .. The images that illustrate the publication ... are the earliest printed representations of any Australian scences" -- Hordern House.

In 1628 the Batavia was on her maiden voyage from Holland to the Dutch East Indies with a cargo of general merchandise, florins, jewels and 318 passengers and crew. It was part of a fleet of seven vessels under the fleet president Pelsaert. The Batavia was skippered by Jacobszoon who had violently quarrelled with the president many years before. The enmity escalated when the skipper was accused by Pelsaert of molesting a women passenger. Jacobszoon conspired with Cornelisz to mutiny but was prevented from doing so because the fleet got separated and the Batavia ran aground on the Houtman Abrolhols Islands, off the West Australian coast with the loss of 70. Some 220 suvivors landed on two islands while Pelsaert and a small crew attempted to find water and the mainland. During his two month absence which saw him navigate to Batavia [present day Jakarta] and find a rescue ship, the survivors divided into two warring camps under Cornelis and Wiebbe Hayes. Cornelis tortured and executed 125 survivors by the time Pelsaert returned who settled the dispute by executing Cornelis and his followers. The other mutineers and the remaining survivors (totalling less than 100) sailed on the Saardam to Batavia, Indonesia. Two mutineers were marrooned on the mainland to reconnoitre and provide feedback when rescued later. They were never seen again. A Board of Inquiry decided Pelsaert was partly responsible due to a lack of authority and seized his financial assets. He died a year later in 1630. Hayes was hailed a hero. Jacobszoon escaped execution due to lack of evidence and what became of him is unknown. Pelsaert's adventures first appeared in Seyger van Rechteren's journal (1635) and Commelin's collection (1645) but Pelsaert's own account only first appeared in 1647 (Amsterdam).
Pelsaert (born ca. 1590, Amsterdam) entered the service of the Dutch East India Company in 1618. Between 1620 and 1627 he was the Company's chief representative in Agra, India and wrote a report on the state of Dutch commerce in India. In 1628 he returned to Holland and was given a fleet of seven vessels and sailed for Batavia, Indonesia. He is famous as the Commander of the ship the Batavia wrecked off the north-west coast of West Australia, 1629 and his rescue of the remaining survivors from the mutineers, the event adversely affecting his health. He took part in an expedition to Sumatra but died in Batavia in 1630.
