Summary

Poor results in organizational communication research may be due to the lack of comparative research, relying instead on small, unrepresentative samples from one or two organizations. Measurement techniques such as the communication audit and the network analysis make possible the comparison of different organizations and the collection of data banks for determining interorganizational norms. The 75-item LTT communication audit, developed by the Helsinki Research Institute for Business Economics (LTT), was used with 22 organizations and a total of 5,578 persons between 1973 and 1977. Results indicated that the relationship between communication and job satisfactions is situational and contingent, depending on organizational and communication climates; communication and job satisfactions are fundamentally different. A distance-direction model of the organizational communication situation has been developed on the basis of the results of this series of studies. According to the model, satisfaction with organizational communication is greater when communication distance is short and when the subject acts as sender. The refined organizational communication development (OCD) audit was developed as a standardized procedure on the basis of the LTT studies and involves the four phases of initiation, diagnosis, treatment, and feedback to improve the communication of an organization.
