The 66 school censorship cases reported between 1976 and 1978 (it is estimated that only one censorship case in 25 is ever reported) do not really reveal clearcut regional patterns, but they reflect individual and selective group pressures against profanity, blasphemy, un-Christian thoughts, indecency (sexually explicit language and nude pictures), drug use, radical liberalism, bias, and the undermining of traditional values. This censorship, influenced mainly by a new wave of national conservatism and the "back to basics" education movement, is systematically promoted by such people as Norma and Mel Gabler of Longview, Texas, whose Educational Research Analysts organization supplies would-be censors with ready-made textbook reviews and worksheets for preparing censorship proposals. Opponents of such censorship, citing its stifling and dangerous impact on the educational system, are working just as hard to refute the censors' efforts. Through all the turmoil, some educators are seeking alternatives to the polarization of views that is so evident; and they maintain that parents should be included in the textbook selection/review process to eliminate bad feelings between parents and schools and to create a forum for a sensible, controlled response to the problem. (Two tables provide analytical data about the 66 censorship cases.) (RL)
