Summary

A total of 162 elementary school children who were underachieving in reading were selected to participate in a supplementary program that used paperback books to improve reading competency. Exit scores were predicted for each student. The program focused on the following components: encouraging students to read from a wide selection of readily available paperback books; meeting with students to have them informally discuss books they had read and having them respond orally to comprehension questions related to the books; establishing a Reading Is Fundamental program to encourage the development of home libraries; encouraging students to listen to taped stories and discuss comprehension; establishing incentives for students to display reports or illustrations about books they had read; and creating a communication system between parents and teachers to monitor student participation in a home reading program. After participating in the program for one school year, 87% of the students achieved or exceeded their predicted exit scores. An examination of the data indicated that the positive impact of the program resulted in significant annual gains as measured by grade equivalent units on the Metropolitan Reading Achievement Test. Extensive appendixes contain forms, evaluation instruments, and other materials related to the program. (Author/FL)
