Ron Finneran, born in 1944, discusses his family and childhood; being diagnosed with poliomyelitis; living as a hospital resident; his schooling and treatment by peers; participating in sports; employment; joining a Cricket Club; his parents encouraging him to be independent; moving to New Zealand for 2 years; returning to Australia; skiing for the first time (1974); sailing and Yacht Clubs; equipment for skiers with a disability; moving to Thredbo, New South Wales; working in a ski management company (1975); developing sports programs for people with a disability with the N.S.W. Department of Sport and Recreation; working in Canada and the U.S.; attending the Winter Paralympic Games Sweden (1976); classification of athletes with a disability; living and studying in Sweden (1976-1978); receiving his Diploma in Physical Education and Recreation.
Finneran discusses establishing an alpine ski program for skiers with a disability; returning to Australia (1978); establishing the Australian Disabled Skiers Federation (ADSF); receiving support from Thredbo businesses and the Australian Sports Commission; the Australian Ski Federation; funding; talent identification and the development of programs; his roles as Paralympic Games Chef de Mission; Paralympic Games Sydney 2000 bid controversies; his involvement in the International Alpine Technical Committee; his involvement in Northcott Disability Services; other roles he has undertaken in sports administration; Australia's international ranking in elite sports for athletes with a disability; particular athletes and their achievements; honours and awards received; his family and the impact of his work on them; changes in public attitudes towards people with a disability; facilities for people with a disability; his current work promoting polio vaccination.
