Summary

This guide provides practical ideas for incorporating the concept of voluntary simplicity into home economics classes. Discussed in the first chapter are the need to study voluntary simplicity, its potential contributions to home economics, and techniques and a questionnaire for measuring student attitudes toward the concept. The remaining chapters contain suggested classroom techniques and learning activities for use in incorporating the concept of voluntary simplicity into the following topics typically addressed in home economics courses: housing (energy use in the home, orientation of a home to the sun, and natural ways to warm and cool a home); foods and nutrition (energy use in cooking and food production, consideration of complementary proteins in food selection, and energy efficiency in the kitchen); clothing and textiles (dressing to keep warm or cool, extending the life of clothing, managing energy in clothing care and through window treatments, and selecting accessories for the home); and interpersonal relations (exploring life-styles, contributing to one's community, and helping and cooperating with others). Concluding the guide are lists of resource films and filmstrips, magazines and guides, vegetarian cookbooks, and organizations. (MN)
