This master plan focuses attention on the roles computers will play in improving the quality of education over the next 5 years in the Maricopa Community College District. Following an executive summary and introductory material, definitions of instructional computing, computer infusion, and levels of software are presented along with assumptions about students' computer knowledge, telecommunications, library automation, capital spending, county growth, and college-district tension underpinning the plan. Next, the current state of instructional computing at the college is assessed, focusing on computers as the subject of and adjunct to instruction; level of faculty computer sophistication; computer software currently used in instruction; computer hardware available for instruction; administrative and support structures for instructional computing; and current modes for faculty computer learning. Next, the future of instructional computing in the district is discussed, with emphasis on the next 5 years. The next sections consider the needs of instructional computing (i.e., enabling the instructor, providing programmer support, and exerting leadership) and offer recommendations for meeting those needs. Appendices contain information on the development of the plan, interview data, and an outline on computer literacy in Maricopa County. (LAL)
