Counselor development from the beginning counselor to the master counselor has been researched as to the most beneficial model for describing the progression of the trainee. One developmental model, the Integrated Developmental Model, describes three stages plus an integrated fourth stage that a counseling trainee moves through from a beginning counselor to a master counselor. This study examined trainees' and supervisors' perceptions of development and environmental needs for supervision over the semester. Fifteen pairs of trainees and supervisors from doctoral and master level programs participated in the study. Trainees and supervisors completed questionnaires measuring perceived level of development of the trainee, perceived needs of trainees for supervision environments, supervisory style, and supervisor perception. The results indicated that at the beginning of the semester the trainees perceived themselves as having a higher developmental level than did their supervisors. However, trainees and supervisors perceived the trainees as increasing their level of development over the semester, lending support for trainee development in supervision. The supervisors perceived a greater degree of change over the semester than did the trainees, indicating that supervisors perceived the trainees as needing less structure and instruction from the supervisor at the end of the semester than did the trainees.
