Patricia Kirby was placed in the Carramar Orphanage at the age of two months. Her mother would not sign adoption papers so she remained a ward of the state. She talks about her first memory of being in a foster home at the age of four; her memories of institutions and the way of life; her many foster placements; living with one family for ten years; schooling and socialisation; her life after leaving the institution; her marriage and children; meeting her birth family. Her thoughts on institutional care and other life issues are discussed.
