James Guppy, born in London (1954), discusses his childhood; his parents, siblings and family background; moving to Manchester; schooling; moving to St. Albans; his early love of drawing and art; completing a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree (Economics/Art) (1976); completing a Masters in Art at Lancaster University (1982); his reasons for migrating to Australia; his early impressions of Australia’s North Coast and its culture; his mural art; teaching and odd jobs; becoming an acrylic artist; his residency at the University of N.S.W.; entering a painting for the Archibald Prize; print-making; commissions; shows and exhibitions; increasing recognition and acceptance of his work; spending a year in the United States; returning to live in Sydney; particular directions, trends and series in his work; artistic techniques and methods; artists and suffering; music and painting; photography and painting; his wife (Trude Helm), her support and her influence on him; galleries and the gentrification of urban areas; changes in the art scene that he has witnessed; religion and spiritualism.
