Summary

The collection comprises: 1. Typed note about the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914. 2. Diary and notebook, Queen Mary Land (2 v.) 3. Notes written on the 'Aurora', 1 Jan.-8 Feb. 1912. 4. Two letters from Sir Douglas Mawson to Sydney Jones. 5. Sundry loose notes. 6. Expedition notepaper (blank) 7. Six photographs (very indistinct) 8. Envelope marked 'Silicagel'.

Biography/History

Sydney Evan Jones was a medical officer on the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914. Jones was one of the western party who established a base on Shackleton Ice Shelf under the command of Francis Wild. Jones led a group that explored Mount Gauss and the neighbouring coastline and investigated bird life in that region. Extracts from Jones' diary were published in Mawson's 'Home of the blizzard'.
