Donald Toombs, born in 1948, discusses his parents and grandparents; his siblings; early memories of Cairns, Qld.; chores; food; deafness; Christmas; schooling; difficulties in the family and his father leaving; living on a farm (1958); he and his siblings being separated from each other; living with his aunt and uncle near Innisfail; fond memories of the Italian community in the area; working around the house and farm; living conditions; food and hunger; cruelty and abuse; the Child Welfare Department’s reaction to the children’s treatment; the neighbours’ reaction to the children’s treatment; leaving the farm and being on the run; coping mechanisms; being helped by a priest; joining the Citizen Military Force; the ongoing effect of his childhood experiences on his later life and behaviours; relationships and marriages; learning from life experiences; compensation; his wishes for his life into the future; his reasons for telling his story.
