David Dowling, born in Brisbane (1946), talks about having limited memories of his early life in poverty and of his mother; being placed in St Vincent's orphanage at Nudgee at four; being separated from his sisters; having nuns as primary carers and teachers; the harshness of daily life in the orphanage; enjoying school and being an altar boy; leaving the orphanage to continue schooling with a foster family; the challenges of the transition to foster care; enjoying high school; renewing contact with his sisters; leaving school and foster care to become an apprentice mechanic; getting married; joining the army; qualifying as radio technician; being sent to Vietnam (1967); separating from his wife; his experiences in the army and Vietnam; difficulties after returning from Vietnam; working as an apprentice electrician and then in telecommunications for thirty years; remarrying and settling down; the importance of his wife and her support; accepting a redundancy package and achieving financial security; investing in Storm Financial and losing almost everything including his home; forming Storm Investors Consumer Action Group; having to return to work; the impact of his childhood experiences on his life, relationships and identity.
