Beryl Grant gives some biographical information, talks about her schooling; father’s death at 39 of appendicitis, schooling in Perth; younger brother, Norman born 6 weeks after father’s death, mother establishes millinery business in Perth; mother’s death at age 46; separation of children, Beryl, 14 lives with Senator Agnes Robertson, leaves school at 14yrs; employment; nursing training in Perth; teacher of nursing at Children’s Hospital, 1949 – 1951; 1951- 1953 travels to Britain; does private nursing; on return to Australia midwifery training at King Edward Hospital; position at Alexandra Home for Mothers and Babies and Mothercraft Training Centre, becomes first Matron at Ngala Mothercraft Home and Training Centre. Discusses Child Welfare Department’s policy of more home-like situation for children in Mount Lawley Reception Home and establishment of Ngala; fostering, neglected children, residential care, Mother and Baby Unit; role in creating the new Ng’ala; changes in response to changes in society; parenting classes; Aboriginal children in Ng’ala; relationship between Ng’ala and government departments; social work; Sue Booth; highlights of her life, need to care for children; life after retirement, various committees.
