Summary

The two mats are Tongan. One mat consists of two woven mats sewn together at the edges. The tapa was probably worn as a loin cloth and is sewn together. Dr Adrienne Kaeppler says this is a fine example--Supplied by researcher, 2008.

Biography/History

The word tapa is used by most English speakers and has become the English term for barkcloth. Kapa is the Hawaiian word, ngatu is Tongan and other Polynesian languages have their own term for barkcloth.
