Side. 1. Alan Shadwick starts by recalling when he first became acquainted with Martin Boyd at a Pascifist Meeting for consciencious objectors. He then talks about some of the various places where Martin Boyd lived and the discussions he had with him over various parts of the novel 'Lucinda Brayford' which the author was working on at the time. He describes his attendance of evensong at Kings Chapel and gives what he feels to have been Martin Boyd's attitude towards religion, recalling a time when he went to a Franciscan Monastry to see if he had a vocation; his decision instead to become a writer. He gives his recollections of some of the holidays they took together in Europe and speaks about some of the authors literary likes and dislikes.
Side 2. Alan Shadwick discusses Martin Boyd's novel 'Much else in Italy' and goes on to describe the author's political ideals, explaining how these ideals would sometimes be expressed by the various characters in his books. He then talks about Martin Boyd's attitude towards the visual arts and what success he had as a painter. He describes the authors disappointment at the lack of attention and recognition that his works received and also speaks again of his pascifist ideals.
Tape 2. Alan Shadwick recalls Martin Boyd's belief in astrology. After about 10 minutes there is a break in the interview as the discussion on the order of verses from the hymn Jerusalem, used for mottos two chapters in Martin Boyd's novel 'Such Pleasure' has been deleted as requested by Mr Shadwicik. This break lasts for 55 minutes and then the interview resumes. He finishes finally by stating how pleased he is at the recent revival of interest in Australia, in the novels of Martin Boyd.
