Arther Orton's appeal to the British public
Bib ID 5971073
Format BookBook
Description [London] : E. Appleyard, [1873?]
1 broadside : ill. ; 51 x 38 cm.
Summary

"Rare. This apparently unrecorded broadside is an excellent example of the type of satirical ephemera produced over the nearly twenty year period that [Orton's] claim was debated in public. The broadside was produced after Orton was exposed as a fraud by lacking the tattoo that the real Sir Roger was known to have. It consists of a list of sixteen statements ('claims') whereby Orton seeks to set his story straight, refuting all the substantive points of evidence against him and indeed his own story. The composer of the work has obviously had great fun with misspelling as did the illustrator of the small portrait of Orton eyeing his purse"--Bookseller's description.
