Summary

"The small town of Kilmore is a settlement north of Melbourne, and was infamous at the time for brawling and political strife, so it is possible that this arson attack relates to some of those ructions." --Hordern House catalogue, The collection of Robert Edwards AO (2012), no. 23.

Biography/History

John Butler's farm, Bylands, was located near Kilmore. It is not clear whether the reward was offered by John Butler senior or junior. Both were born in Tipperary, Ireland. The son appears to have arrived in the area first and worked there as a blacksmith from the early 1850s. He was the proprietor of the Red Lion hotel in Kilmore from 1856. Both died in 1865, the son aged 44 on 16 August, and the father aged 77 on 23 September.
