Biography/History

Thomas Bewes Strangways (1809-1859) was one of the founding settlers of South Australia. He sailed on HMS Buffalo with Governor Hindmarsh, arriving in Adelaide in December 1836. He was considered a acceptable suitor for Hindmarsh's daughter, Jane, although they did not marry. Strangways was Colonial Secretary pro tem for a year, resigning on 13 July 1838. Strangways was one of the explorers on the whale boat Currency Lass that explored the area around the Fleurieu Peninsula, Lake Alexandrina, and the Murray mouth, naming Currency Creek and Hindmarsh Island. He later farmed in the Inman Valley, before returning to live in Adelaide.

This broadside "relates to a fiery debate between Governor Hindmarsh and the Resident Commissioner J. Hurtle Fisher, in which Hindmarsh had fired Robert Gouger from the post of Colonial Secretary and installed his own man. The change was made at the orders of Hindmarsh who was incensed at Gouger's refusal to countenance establishing the capital near the mouth of the Murray, a refusal which put him in open conflict with Fisher." --Hordern House catalogue, The collection of Robert Edwards AO (2012), no. 131.
